WWR: Insomnia & Production

It’s fifteen till four, the shades are down so I can’t tell if the sun is ready to be awake, and I’m sitting in front of the keyboard mashing away like a keyboard warrior that is armored by a single piece of chonies.  In a few hours I have to be awake, teeth brushed, coffee drank, and out the door running up the hill to catch the train to work.

Not getting a lot of sleep is something that I am accustomed to, averaging 4-5 hours of sleep. lately my average is slowly dwindling down to 2 hours. Just yesterday I went to bed before four but was up by 5:30. Tonight, or should I say this morning, I am going to bed after four with hopes of getting at least three hours of sleep. When people find out that I don’t sleep much, they wonder how one can function with the lack of sleep. I wonder that too. Does the lack of sleep reduce the quality of work that I produce, attentiveness at meetings, and producing work efficiently?

I’ll tell you right now that the quality of my work is equal whether I get sleep or not, but since I ‘m not keeping any sort of record to defend what I’m saying, you can call bullshit. As for attentiveness,  my attentiveness at meetings is rather high when well rested but rather low when tired. So… By not paying attention at meetings, that action alone can affect how effective I am at producing work and completing projects in a timely manner.

What about the things that I do when I’m up in the middle of the night, am I being productive with myself? No. The tasks that I do while not sleeping in the middle of the night can range from playing games to staring at the ceiling and to something random such as typing up this blog post. Meh.

Well… We are about to go off in a tangent, actually more like rambling. Lack of focus should be one of the traits from the lack of sleep. Actually consumption of alcohol is  an insomnia trait that I wished I currently have. But back to the subject. No. I don’t think that I am just as productive at work when only receiving less than three hours of sleep. I told you to call bullshit. But! I work just as well, if not better, when I receive six hours of sleep or less versus sleep over 6 hours. I don’t want you to think that I don’t like sleeping when the fact is that sleeping is an activity that I do enjoy doing, especially once I am asleep.

I should be asking myself what is in the back of my head that is keeping me up… When I started this new job is about the time when my sleeping pattern shortened. Shh…. Don’t tell my girlfriend, she’ll use it as ammunition to force me to quit. Prior to starting this new job with a new company, I was getting roughly over eight hours of sleep but going to the gym at the same time. New job, no more gym time, equals lack of sleep.

Ha! I found out why I’m still up so late everyday. The reason to the lack of sleep is that I stopped working out and my body just is not ready for bed with all that pent up energy.

After quickly skimming through this post I just realized that we all need a nice vacay and I need sleep.

I do pray that this post makes sense. An English major I am not but worried that this post is garbage. Not sure if I am trying to make a point or not. Hell… I just want four hours of peaceful snoring in bed…

Time to goo mimis.

EDC Day 2, OMG!

What another awesome day at EDC! W started the day a little late, didn’t get past the gate till about ten but still managed to see a ton of headliners and have some fun.

On a tiny journalist news reporting note, there was a small isolated fire last night that involved a golf cart, which was probably caused by a short circuit. Firefighters responded to the scene quickly and were able to extinguish the flame before anyone could get hurt and too damper the mood of the revelers.

I did make a small time lapse that didn’t turn out to well due to the lighting condition. However if you’d like to view the time-lapse video, you can view it here.

When we got back to our hotel we checked out the Bamboo Pool here at the Cosmopolitan where we played around with the GoPro to get some cool and neat shots. Now I’m off to get some rest; it’s about noon and hasn’t slept since we got back.

EDC Day 1

First day of EDC was amazing, music and venue was to die for, but very hot. Couldn’t stay under the Circuit Grounds to long cause of the heat trapped under the tent. I stayed well hydrated and had to step away from the stages a few times to cool down. Wished that my GoPro battery hadn’t died, or invested in a second battery pack, because I was unable to capture as much video as I would have like. I did miss the large meet up yesterday at 9 and was disappointed about that, was in the middle of R3hab’s set where I lost the track of time. Anyway, had a blast and still have 2 more days of amazing experience to look forward to!

Beyond Wonderland – Bay Area

This past Saturday in Oakland there were almost 400 noise complaints for a rave that was happening at the O.co Coliseum. This rave that lasted till 2 in the morning had headliners that consisted of Avicii, Alesso, Sander van Doorn, Chuckie, and much more. This rave that caused so much noise that can be felt and heard for miles was called Beyond Wonderland. And what a wonderful experience it was!

Beyond Wonderland has been around for sometime however this was the first time that Insomniac has decided to bring it north to the San Francisco Bay Area. The line to enter the venue moved fast, the weather wasn’t to cold, the Dj’s were killing it, and my ears were ringing till this afternoon 🙂

Going crazy in the Madhatter’s Castle!

I have included a map (courtesy of Insomniac) of the venue below so you can get an idea of the venue. For those of you unfamiliar with O.co Coliseum and the Oracle Arena, the O.co is the home of both the Oakland Athletics and the Oakland Raiders while the Oracle Arena is the home of the Golden State Warriors. The O.co is set to the East of the Oracle Arena where they are both flanked by parking to the north and south. The venue was set in the south parking lot. There were 3 stages; the Caterpillar Garden which was to the north east of the venue, the Madhatter’s Castle set in the middle, and the Queens’s Domain to the south. There was a ferries wheel, drinks, and other “attractions” that were set between the Madhatter’s Castle and the Queen’s Domain.

Map of Beyond Wonderland

With the name Beyond Wonderland I was coming to the venue expecting to go down the rabbit hole and find myself in a whole new world. Instead I ended up at the Madhatter’s table sober. Beyond Wonderland was like a bad regurgitation of the Electronic Daisy Carnival. I didn’t feel energy in the air, the ferries wheel and the picnic area seemed like an afterthought, and there wasn’t enough lights… What I mean by not enough lights is that the physical experience wasn’t all there. This is my opinion and I know that it aint fair to compare Beyond Wonderland with EDC.  With that said, the sets were amazing! Which is the very reason why people come to these events/raves/festivals. To hear and see their favorite DJ’s perform and fuck them sideways.

Sander van Doorn.

Oh man, where do I start? I saw Avicii for the first time and his set was crazy! Craziest part of it was that in the middle of his set, someone ignited a tear gas or let lose a fire extinguisher. I was to the right side of the tent when what ever it was went off and as soon as it did, many of us cleared the tent fast! People were running while covering their face, some were chocking and coughing, and there were still people enjoying the music. So I’m sure that what ever it was, was not tear gas. If it were, I’d be dying and more people would had been affected. The music kept on going and once the ominous cloud cleared, everyone went back in the tent to enjoy the night.

Avicii throwing it down!

I can’t stop saying how wonderful the DJ’s were. Cazzette, Thomas Gold, and all the other DJ’s that I saw that night. I wished that there was better timing with the different set times and less overlapping. Since there were overlapping set times I caught the tail end of some sets. For example, after Aviccii I went from the Queen’s Domain to the Madhatter’s Castle to catch the end of Chuckie‘s set. I wished that I saw all of Chuckie’s set since he was killing it.

Chuckie getting down in the Madhatter’s Castle!

The best DJ of the night would be Sander van Doorn. This. Guy. Killed. It. WOW! Sander’s set at EDC was one of my favorite form that weekend. But the set that Sander played for Beyond was a godly amount better! Holy shit! Can you say wow! Damn, damn, damn. Here’s a tease of Sander’s set from my girlfriend.

I’m thankful that Insomniac brought Beyond Wonderland and these wonderful DJ’s to the Bay Area. Over all the night was bad ass! I know that I’m being ignorant for writing that my ears were ringing the next day but I earned those damage ear drums. Next time I’ll bring ear buds. Which means that next time Beyond Wonderland is up here in the Bay Area, I’m going.

YEAH!

EDC 2012

WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!

Sander Van Doorm
Sander Van Doorm doing it big at EDC

This was my first time ever attending an event of this magnitude! Great music, fireworks, lights, fire, lasers, friends, and wind, I loved it!

If you do not know what the Electric Daisy Carnival is, click here to see a trailer to the event.

Yes, I am STILL bummed out on  missing Steve Aoki performing with Blue Man Group, Tiesto, and Avicii (Avicii did perform on Sunday) but glad that Insomniac did the right thing by cancelling the event.

For those of you going through EDC withdrawals, here’s the set list from EDC: http://www.electricnation.net/edclv/

“Get the sets you missed and the ones you love” – Jon Nguyen.

I’ll let my Instagram pics do the rest of the talking 🙂

Lights and more lights!
Enjoying Nicky Romero in the Kinetic Field
Lights and rides
Private light show 🙂
Going wild to Calvin Harris
Kinetic Field being cleared out for our safety against the mighty wind

Sadly that above was my last EDC pic of the whole 3 day event. I ended up selling my Sunday ticket to a buddy that drove down but didn’t have a ticket. We should had found one on CL so that we all could had enjoyed the experience together. My only regret for the weekend. I’ll post more pics and some videos up from my camera when I get a chance later this week… Or weekend since it’s Design Week here in the City. Until then, dance the night away 🙂
